Escape from Stardale
Chapter 1- The uncharted city
Taylor laid her head against the cold, glass car window looking out in the never ending wilderness. Her dad had lost his job over in Washington and he was stressing for days to find a close job. So far none of the jobs were good enough to pay for all the needs for the family. He tried finding a job around the states around Washington but still failed to find the right job. Then just a few weeks ago he had a meeting at Las Vegas, he found a cheep airplane ticket in Saint George and was going to rent a car to Vegas. While he was driving down to Vegas he found a sign on a thin dirt road for applying for a job in a small city called Stardale. Though the road was 460 miles off of the main road he called the owner and he got him a job in Stardale for a good pay. After he got back from his meeting he looked up where Stardale was but it was uncharted. He called the owner again and the owner gave him instructions of how to get to Stardale. He also mentioned a furnished home for sale that his family could move into for a good price in Stardale too.
So now Taylor was sitting in there gold colored Suburban down a hardly used dirt road towards Stardale. The road hardly even looked like a road, grass had grown over it so you would know it was hardly ever used. Though the ride in the car was bumpy, Taylor was starting to doze off to sleep. They had been on the road from Washington for two days now and they were going to get to Stardale around midnight. Micheal, her two year old little brother, was already asleep in his car seat and was cuddled up with his stuffed giraffe. Taylor then fell asleep without realizing it, technically the only person who was awake now was Taylor's dad who was driving.
A few hours had past and Kristen woke up from her nap. She was the first to wake up and discover the unknown land around her. She unbuckled and leaned over to her dad.
"Dad, where are we?" She asked
"I don't know, in the middle of nowhere I guess." he shrugged his shoulders.
Taylor's mom woke up next and looked around her, even she didn't know where they were.
"Shouldn't the city be close?" Taylor's mother asked.
"Yah, we should be turning off into Stardale." He said, a bit confused himself.
There was nothing in sight. There were no side roads, no plateau's for the city to hide behind, not even any signs of life in the blazing hot weather. Then it made it even more confusing when there dad stopped the car and was turning off. There was no road, it was just weeds and shrubbery. How could there dad know where to go, even a curious four wheeler going down this road would find this city. He started driving down the rocky land until out in the distance there was a city. The city didn't have tall buildings or very good lighting, it was as if it was trying to hide from the world. And suddenly they were driving on a paved road.
The first thing they drove into was the business zone area, there was a good size store, a bank of Stardale, there was also an office building with one sided windows covering the entire thing, and some other necessary buildings for the city's use. Though not a single car was driving down the street, all the lights of the buildings were off. They drove down into the neighborhood, and only half of the windows had the lights on. Every single house looked exactly like the other, they were all brown and tan with no other color intercepting with it. In every single driveway of each house was either a tan or brown SUV parked. Not a single driveway did they find it empty or with a colored car parked there. It made there mini van feel out of place being a light blue color, and being the only car out in the street.
Further down the street was a large lake, reaching as far as Taylor could see. She just didn't understand why that lake hadn't dried up yet, though it was quite large. They were almost to the lake until Taylor's dad turned into a driveway of a house exactly like the others. This house was just a couple of houses from the lake, there was a large swimming area where they were close by to. Taylor's family hopped out of the van and they brought there luggage into the front room. Everything was brown and tan just like the outside and it seemed dark and dull within the house.
Taylor took Micheal to his room which was already furnished with browns and tans. Micheal yawned and Taylor took him to bed. She walked into her room to look almost exactly like Micheal's, everything was brown and tan with no girl power in it whatsoever. She put her heart patterned suitcase on the bed and walked to the brown and tan kitchen where her parents were.
"Maybe we can remodel this house." Taylor said, looking around her. She didn't like the house plan, and especially the colors they chose.
"Its a rental Taylor, you should be glad we were able to get a furnished home." Her mother explained, placing a box of there pots and pans on the counter.
"It's so ugly, I don't like it." Taylor complained.
Her mother sighed and walked back over to Taylor.
"We have a house, and we have furniture. Just live with it for now, and maybe later on we will refurnish this house for good. Alright?" She asked.
Taylor nodded and decided she was going to check out the other rooms. All the rooms were just the normal colors within the house of browns and tans, it was starting to paranoid her. It was also late in the night and she was pretty tired. Taylor walked into her bedroom, slipped on her blue pajamas and went to sleep in the brown bed.
The next day came and Taylor walked into the kitchen. Her mom had packed some weeks worth of food for there first days, so the cereal was on the table. Taylor quickly ate and left the kitchen, she wanted to call her friends so badly. She ran into her room, got into her suitcase and pulled out her cell phone. Her best friend, Katie, told her to call her as soon as she got there. But of course as she got there it was too late in the night, so she was going to be the first one called this morning.
She flipped open her cell phone to find that there was no service, she had no bars. She walked around the house, trying to find at least one bar. Then she walked outside to find a bar come up. She jumped for joy and the bar went away. Taylor grumbled and started walking down the empty street. Then a bar came, she starting typing in the numbers and starting calling her friend.
Hey Katie-" Suddenly a man in a black suit and dark shades came up to her. He held out his hand to show to give the phone to him. Taylor tried to ignore.
"Yah Katie, I got here. So far its pretty boring looking, but I am okay with it I guess... well, um there is a scary man in front of me. And I think he wants my-" The man snatched her phone from her ear, not letting her talk any more.
"Hello, Taylor, what is going on? Taylor?" the man shut the phone and put it in his pocket.
"WHAT WAS THAT FOR!!!!!!!!!" She boomed.
"It is under strict orders that no electronics in this city. You are to go straight to your home, for time to play is at three." The man said with no expression.
"Okay, well for one thing I do not call it play. I call it hang out, for another thing I am not-" The man stopped her.
"You are under strict orders to stay inside until time to play. You are new here and do not know our rules. Go to your home and I will be there momentarily to view over our rules to you and your family." The man said, and he swiftly turned around and walked away.
Kristen wanted to scream, he didn't have the right to take away her cell phone. The man seemed like some kind of robot- like security guard for the city. She stomped back over to her house and came in to find her family in the living room. They didn't seem very happy either, for the television had turned on so suddenly to a message on the TV. It read: Television is only to be watched at precisely seven every night, if you miss the time you do not get television for the rest of the day. Her whole family, including herself felt bummed out to find they couldn't watch television until seven sharp tonight. Her mother turned to Taylor, who was so angry she was turning red.
"What is the matter Taylor, it looked like you can bite someones head off." She teased.
"Yah, I want to bite that mans head off." She growled.
"What man?" She asked, standing up from the couch.
"That man out in the street. He took my cell phone away and said that it is under strict orders that I can't use electronics." She said, her eyes shooting out sparks of fire.
"I'm sorry Taylor, we just need to-" Before she could finish the doorbell rang.
Micheal jumped up from the couch and rose his hand.
"I got it, I got it!" He shouted, darting over to the door with his little legs.
He swung open the door and the same guy in the black suit and dark shades came into the room, brushing Micheal aside. Micheal didn't seem so excited any more, he shut the door and he ran over to his mom, hugging her leg. The room became deathly silent as the man entered the living room. He had a sour face on, making it seem unwelcoming and scary.
"I am Tom, the head security guard. I have come to tell you some rules of the city, for this is going to be different that what you normally find in a city." Taylor and her family sat down on the couch, trying to get comfortable. Unsure how long this list of rules is going to be.
"For each rule you break you get one warning, the second time you get a punishment depending of what you have. If you break over twenty rules you get sent to the box." Micheal rose his hand, the man nodded his head to let Micheal say what he has to say.
"What is the box?" He asked.
"The box is a box car that we use as our jail cells. If you break that certain amount you get sent to the box for the certain amount of time. If you end up breaking a large rule, then you end up in the box... forever." The family looked frightened, unsure what to do. With how he explained it, it looked like there was going to be a lot of rules to follow. There dad was starting to debate whether he should really keep the job, for he wasn't liking this either.
"Now for the rules. Rule number one, no running." Tony looked at Micheal with a shameful look on his face, "Rule number two, no shouting. Rule number three, no screaming. Rule number four, no sounds from with your mouth with the acceptance of speaking. Rule number five, no fighting. Rule number six, no music." Taylor sat up, pounding her fist against the coffee table.
"NO MUSIC!?" She shouted.
"Warning, no shouting. Rule number seven, no humming. Rule number eight, no crying. Rule number nine, no speaking out of turn..." Tony went on and on about the rules, some almost impossible not to break. When Tony got to rule number thirty, Micheal was already starting to fall asleep. Then when he got to the fifties Taylor was starting to doze off. Her parents tried staying alert, but you could tell they were struggling.
"Rule number one hundred and fifty six, shopping days are on Tuesdays at precisely two in the afternoon. Rule number one hundred and fifty seven, laundry days are on Thursday's at two in the after noon. Rule number two hundred and fifty eight, clean up days are on Monday's at two in the after noon. Rule number..." After he got over the hundreds they all new this wasn't going to be a fun living after all. Once he got to the three hundreds, even her parents had fallen asleep on the couch. Taylor then woke up when he was at rule number four hundred and seventy four. She didn't know how it was going to end, so she just went back to sleep. waiting for the rules to be over by now.
"Rule number five hundred and twelve, once you are in the city you can never leave. You are to live here for the rest of your lives, and anyone who escapes will risk the chances of living in the box for the rest of there life." then he finished. As soon as he finished his last rule, the whole family woke up not noticing what that last rule really was.
Tony handed them a large rule book, and then left.
"I can't have music." Taylor said, looking down at her feet.
"Can we move again?" She added.
"That would be nice." Her dad agreed.
Taylor's mom was scanning through the book and sighed.
"Did we miss some important rules?" Taylor asked.
Her mom nodded.
"This is at the beginning of the book, it says that we are being watched at all angles and at all places in the entire city. So none of the rules we break would be kept secret for long." Her mother sighed.
Kristen looked up to find tiny cameras on all corners of the ceilings. She starting to feel even more uncomfortable, for she was being watch all day, all the time.
"There is also something else... we can't leave."
"So we are stuck here forever?" Taylor asked.
"Yes, I'm afraid so."
Chapter 2- Five hundred and twelve rules not to break
It was constant to find Tony coming up to the door, giving Taylor and her family warnings. One time Taylor had shouted and since she had already gotten one warning she got to have her punishment. Tony had come up to there doorway and called Kristen over.
"No shouting, second warning. Come with me." He said, grabbing Taylor's arm.
He had a tight grip and it was hard to get away. He led her down the street of which was now buzzing with people going to the store, for it was Tuesday and it was afternoon. He shoved her into a black SUV and drove her down town where the large office building was. He pushed her into the building and brought her to the third floor. On the third floor was dozens of little box cars, some crying for help. Tony led her down the room full of box cars and he stopped at a doorway at the end. He opened it to find a empty chair sitting in the middle. He led her to the chair and forced her to sit upon it.
"Though this is not a normal punishment, I did this to show you the different rules you break gets you into. So this is only a short punishment to show you to follow rules correctly." He said, strapping her arms on the arms of the chair.
The second day they were there and it was already turning out bad. He strapped her legs to the chairs legs, and switched off the bright light. :He left the room, leaving Taylor strapped to a hard wooded chair in a pitch dark room, with no windows. She waited, knowing struggling would be useless. It was about an hour later when Tony came back into the room, releasing her and letting her go.
"It is time to play, Tuesday's is swim. You are to go straight to home, get on your swim clothing and head to the lake." He ordered.
Taylor knew not to grumble, that was a rule she had already had a warning for. Instead, in her mind she was screaming her head off, not knowing what else to do. Tony led her back down the stairs and took her home, where she was going to have to get on her swim suit. Her whole family had gone to the lake already, so she just needed to catch up to them. She quickly slipped on her swimsuit in the bathroom where of course, the camera's were not around. She than quickly ran out of the house to find Tony standing at her doorway once again.
"No running, first warning." Taylor sighed, but kept the anger swelling up inside her to herself.
Tony walked off and she slowly walked over to the lake. It seemed like everybody in the entire city was there (And probably was). Her family was sitting on the far side of the swim area, with Micheal swimming close by. Taylor slowly walked over to them and sat next to her parents, unsure if she really wanted to swim. Sitting close by was a large family with dozens of boys and one girl. The girl had long wavy blond hair, but it looked like she had to wear a brown swimsuit. In fact everybody was wearing brown and tan clothing and swim suits. Her family looked out of place and out of color too. The girl with the golden blond hair was paying attention to Taylor too. She walked over to her and sat next to Taylor.
"Hi, I'm Heidi." She said cheerfully.
"Taylor." Taylor said grumpily.
"I see you are new here, they probably won't let you wear that swimsuit anymore. We hardly ever get new people, in fact I have never seen a new person before. The single adult who lived in that house before you had, in fact did a bad choice and ended up in the box and will be for the rest of her life. It is so sad, that house has always been a bad luck house." She said, glancing behind her at the houses.
Taylor didn't like the fact that her house was like a bad luck house.
"Well, anyway. Sorry to worry you. I have never felt comfortable with anybody my age, so I have never made a friend before. Though as I saw you, I felt like I should make friends with you and it looks like I have met someone I trust." Heidi said.
"And you are my first friend I have met since I got here just yesterday." Taylor said with a smile.
Heidi looked around the beach and then looked over at Taylor. She leaned over and whispered in her ear:
"Meet me at my house right after this so you won't get caught, I live right next door on the left."
Taylor nodded, anxios to find out about what Heidi was really thinking of doing. She didn't really want to go sw
