So fall Break just ended yesterday, but during the first couple of days during fall break, we decided to take a miniature trip to Zion's National Park. So we decided to take out trip to Zion's slowly, first visiting Fillmore. Fillmore was actually originally supposed to be Utah's state capitol, not Salt Lake City. So they started building the state capitol, finishing the wing before changing the state capitol to Salt Lake City. So that wing is now the Fillmore museum, so we went to that.
Also, we visited Cove Fort, where the Mormon pioneers settled in the fort for protection of the Indians. It was fun and exciting and after Cove Fort, we went to a cheese factory and tried their amazing squeaky cheese and ice cream. After that we arrived in Cedar City where our hotel is and decided to drive up Kolob canyon, which was amazing. For dinner, we did a progressive dinner, where we get a little bit of everything at every restaurant. We got sticky fingers at Wingers, coleslaw at KFC, fries at Hermies, and we were hoping to get a banana split for dessert at Dairy Queen, but by then we were tired and not feeling so hotsy totsy, so we skipped the banana split and watched Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince at our hotel.
The next day we went swimming, the water relaxing with all of us swimming in the pool. After a pool and a warm, nice shower, we drove off to Zion's national park. We took a shuttle bus, it taking us across the high red cliffs until we reached the last trail, a simple sidewalk trail that would be easy for my parent's knees. At the end of our so-called-hike, it continued on into a more complicated hike I wanted to desperately go on, but my parents couldn't take it. So we returned back to our car a few hours later, driving down another Zion road, taking the scenic route to Cedar city.
As it neared to dark, it began to get rainy, so half our drive was in the rain. We were high on a plateau, the air up there twice as cold, and then to add the cold, wet weather. My sister and mom was too warm in the car to leave, so when my dad parked the car in an empty parking-lot to a small, closed siting spot, we went through the gate and me, my dad, and brother got to see the beautiful view.
It felt odd at that sight seeing spot, it was just the feeling of it. Not a single person around but the three of us, not a single sound of the wind or a car, it was just us, standing there gazing over a valley. The sky gave a dark grey, the orange sunset hidden behind a thick sheet of fog. It was silent... dead silent. Nothing echoed, nothing made a sound, nothing could make this time loud. A single noise we made, even if we yelled, was muffled in the silence. It felt creepy, odd, but at the same time, cool. This scene was so odd you'll just have to be there to see it.
So after a moment of ultimate silence, we returned home about 11 o'clock at night and continued our normal home life. That's what I did, a fun family trip with just the five of us in a small five seater Saturn that's gone through so many problems, it was a miracle we were able to make it work for this trip.
